Texas Tech Alumni Association Chapter Scholarship

One of the most worthwhile endeavors of local chapters of the Texas Tech Alumni Association is the awarding of academic scholarships.  The awards are based on the academic achievement, honors, activities, and to some degree, financial need.  Please return the completed application with any letters of recommendation and a certified transcript to the address listed.

Edna W. Ocker Scholarship

Deadline:  Contact the Del Mar College Music Department

Purpose:  Established by Edna W. Ocker, a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.  Mrs. Ocker taught music at M. Menger Elementary School until her marriage, then taught privately.

Amount:  $1,000/two available

Eligibility:  Applicants must be:

  • accepted or enrolled in Del Mar College as music or music education majors;

  • have a high school GPA of 2.5;

  • maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA;

  • maintain a full-time status (12 or more credits per semester).

Laura Woodman Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Laura Woodman of Banquete who tragically lost her life in the spring of 1983 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  Laura was an honors graduate of Banquete High School and youth rodeo star.  She was Texas state senior cloverleaf barrel racing champion in 1982.  She was attending South West Texas Junior College on a rodeo scholarship at the time of her death.  Laura is remembered as a student and scholar with interests in higher education, the integrity of young people and Texas Youth Rodeo Association.

The KFC Colonel's Scholars Program was created in 2006 and is dedicated to assisting students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a public institution within their legal state of residence.

To qualify:

  • Graduating from high school this academic year (between 12/01/09 and 08/31/10

  • Maintaining a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher

Who can participate?

A student who is considered to be economically disadvantaged and a graduating high school student:

  • is a Texas resident and is eligible to work in the United States.

  • has a minimum overall (cumulative) high school GPA of 3.00 on a four-point scale (to be considered for this scholarship, your overall (cumulative) grade point average must be computed on a four-point scale and on an unweighted basis), or

  • has a minimum score of 900 on the SAT, or

  • has a minimum score of 21 on the ACT;

  • plans to attend an accredited four-year Texas public college or university as a full-time student (minimum 12 semester hours);

  • declares an intent to seek a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering

Again this year, the program has been joined by four education partners: the American Association of School Administrators, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the American School Counselor Association and the National School Public Relations Association.

Established by Luzinka Allen to memorialize her son, Marty Allen, a professional jazz musician who died suddenly in February of 2003.  Allen played piano and keyboard for 33 years.  He played with many internationally known musicians, including Lionel Hampton, Pee Wee Ellis and Bobby McFerrin.

Amount:  $200/one available

Eligibility:  Preference will be given to jazz musicians.  Applicants must:

  • be a graduating senior of a Coastal Bend high school or a college student who attended a Coastal Bend high school;

  • major in music;

  • maintain a 2.5 GPA, and;

  • maintain a course load of at least 12 college credits per semester.

The Reverend E.F. Bennett Scholarship

Established by a group of Corpus Christi business leaders to honor the Rev. Bennett's outstanding record of community service.  The Rev. Bennett, a WWII veteran and former pastor in Refugio and Robstown, has served as a director for 17 area non-profit organizations and as chaplain to the Corpus Christi Police Department and the Nueces County Sheriff's Department.

 

Amount:  $300/one available

Purpose:  Marion Luna Brem and Pat McNeil established this scholarship to encourage students in the Coastal Bend to attend college.

Amount:  Two $1,000 scholarships will be given each year.

  • have a high school diploma or GED certification and a minimum GPA of 2.5;

This scholarship memorializes Cecil E. Burney, founder and president of the Coastal Bend Community Foundation from 1981 to 1989.  He was a prominent attorney, banker, community leader and historian who served as president of numerous local, state and national non-profit organizations and associations.

Amount: $2,000 ($1,000 per semester)/one available

Applicants must:

  • be a high school senior or graduate of a Coastal Bend high school pursuing a liberal arts degree with a major in history, political science, music or education;

  • have a high school GPA of 90 percent or higher;

  • maintain at least 12 hours per semester and a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale;

Doreen Kinkel established this scholarship to honor her daughter, Casey Laine Swakon, on her graduation from Texas A&M University Kingsville and her commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Sue Kay Lay Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Sue Kay Lay, a Baker Junior High School student, who died in an automobile accident at age 13 on June 23, 1970, while visiting the family ranch in Brackettville.

Amount: $1,500/as many as five available (This scholarship is renewable for one additional year.)

Applicants must:

  • be high school seniors graduating at the end of the spring semester;

  • be enrolled in college full time (12 hours or more);

  • have a high school GPA of 95 percent;

  • demonstrate financial need;

  • graduate from a high school in the Coastal Bend;

This scholarship is given to honor Jessy M. Garza.  He was a hardworking man that loved his family, friends, and most of all serving God.  He always taught his children that education was a very important thing and could open so many doors for them.  In August of 2008 he was able to his daughter, Sarah enter her freshman year at TLU.  In November of that same year he was killed in a tragic accident.  His family established this scholarship to help other students who want to achieve a higher education because they knew their father would have loved to help other families.  He knew how expensive college is and was so grateful for the scholarships his daughter received.  He taught his children that blessings should always be paid back.

This scholarship award is given to honor the memory of a young girl who was taken from her parents in a tragic accident.  Leslie was friendly and outgoing.  She enjoyed her young life with friends, cheerleading, her pets and especially, her parents.  She took education seriously, and although she had not yet decided on a career, she knew that a college education was important to her and her family. 

Leslie's parents want to choose a graduating senior who participates in school events, who is a good student and has a true interest in furthering an education.  This scholarship honors Leslie Arredondo by giving others a chance to continue their education.

This scholarship in the amount of $500 is given memory of Jean Dugat by her former students.  Jean Dugat was the journalism teacher at A. C. Jones High School for 39 years (1945-1984).  The applicant must be a graduating senior from A. C. Jones High School who plans to major in journalism, English, or communications.  The other requirements are to complete the application and write an essay one to two pages on why he/she deserves the scholarship.

In memory of Mark Todd Hale, who died from complications arising from elective open-heart surgery on August 12, 1987.  He died before realizing his dream of becoming a law enforcement officer.  He was a dedicated member of the Corpus Christi Law Enforcement Explorer Post #133 for two years and was attending Del Mar College, majoring in criminal justice, at the time of his death.

 

Eligibility:  Applicants must:

  • Be a full-time student (a minimum of 12 semester credit hours) at an accredited college or university during the school year for which the scholarship is awarded.

  • Be a major in criminal justice, with plans for a career in law enforcement.

  • Have a cumulative college grade point average of 3.0 or more or a B or better average in high school.

  • Be a resident of the Coastal Bend of Texas (Aransas, Bee, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio and San Patricio counties).
